What is a room and how does it work

Facebook is constantly making changes to the platform. Modern life realities are such that people spend more and more time in the virtual space. A lot of video conferences are being created that cover all areas of life – work, study, family meetings.

Facebook decided to keep up with its competitors (zoom and skype) and created Messenger Rooms, the so-called Facebook room.

This is a general term that characterizes a separate interactive space for holding conferences.

The capabilities of the new tool allow you to create a video chat in which up to 50 people can participate. Login to it is available for both Facebook users and people who are not registered in it. Talk time is unlimited.

Messenger Room function based on:

• Facebook Messenger;
• Instagram;
• WhatsApp;
• Facebook messages and news feed;
• Groups;

Messenger Room Terms of Service:

• only the creator of the conference has the authority to open, close or delete a chat;
• the beginning of the conversation occurs at the moment when the person who created it enters the system;
• only a Facebook or Messenger user can become a chat creator;
• Entry to the chat by invitation is available to anyone. Invitations can be sent via SMS, email, Instagram, WhatsApp;
• adding a new participant is visible to everyone who is currently in the chat;
• if the room is open, new users can join the conversation. If it is closed, then only those who entered earlier remain, adding new interlocutors is impossible.

Create a room

Through your personal profile:

1. Log in to Facebook with your details.
2. Go to the news feed and look for the video camera icon that says “Room username”.
3. Click on the “Create” button

Creating a room in private messages is only possible on a computer:

1. Click on the “Contacts” block, it is located on the right side of the screen.
2. A list of names that have a video camera icon will appear. Click on it.

Important : this feature is not always available due to the fact that it is under development.

Creating a video conference in Messenger is quite simple:

1. Open Messenger from any device (PC or smartphone);
2. In the Facebook app, go to the “People” tab and click on the “Create Room” button.
3. On the computer on the left, find the line “Chats” and click on the video camera icon with the “+” sign.

Entering the room via whatsapp application:

1. Open the app on your smartphone.
2. Go to the “Calls” tab.
3. Click on the video camera icon. It is located at the bottom right.
4. The system will ask you to switch to the Messenger application, if you do not have it, you will have to install it.

The procedure if you want to enter the Room in a group:

1. Open community.
2. Find the button to create a video chat. It’s under the band’s name and cover.

Conferences

Creating a conference in the community is available to both the creator and one of the participants. However, the author or administrator has the authority to restrict this ability. In addition, the administrator has the right to delete existing rooms at any time.

To limit the ability to create a room for community members, you need to:

1. Open the group profile and find the “Settings” section in the left column.
2. Go to the “Add Extra Features” block. Here you can either completely restrict the ability to create a room for group members, or create a list of those to whom it will be available.

Important : Facebook is currently still finalizing this tool. This is the reason for the differences in the settings and capabilities of video rooms that are created based on different locations.

Start a conversation and make settings

If you want to start a video conference, you need to set the following settings:

• Specify destination. The system will offer many ready-made reasons. For example, “party”, “I’m testing”, “cheers, Friday.” By the name, guests can immediately understand where they are invited.
• Select invitees. It can be any people: your friends and acquaintances. If you want to invite Facebook users, you can select them from your friends list. You can also skip this step and just send invitation links to the right people.
• Specify the start time of the conference. You can start a conversation immediately or set the time in the future.
• If you want to start right away, you need to click on the “Room” button. If the start is delayed, then click on the “Create” button.

That’s all. To take part in the discussion, it is enough to have a microphone and a camera on the device.

If you are the initiator of the chat, then by opening it, you can see on the screen:

• “Share link” caption. When you click on it, a link is copied that can be sent through the list of provided services (SMS, email, Direct to Instagram).
• Buttons “Switch camera”, “Mute video”, “Exit conversation”. They are at the top of the screen.
• Under the icon with silhouettes of men, you can see a list of interlocutors. Here you can see who joined the conference, as well as remove some participants.
• Using the settings icon, you can close the meeting (then no one else can join the discussion) or open it.

Information for invited conference participants:

• invitations to join a Facebook video conference are visible under the Messenger icon at the top of the screen. In addition, active rooms can be viewed at the beginning of the news feed or letters. Under them there will be a button “Start”;
• if you received an invitation via email, WhatsApp or Instagram, then it looks like a simple message or letter. You only need to open it and follow the link;
• if you received an invitation, then you must click on the “Start” button;
• if this is the first launch, then the system will ask for permission to access the camera and microphone;
• the icons for switching and turning off cameras are available to you;
• if you want to leave the room, just click on the cross icon;
• if you want to see all the participants of the conference, then you need to click on the icon with the silhouettes of little men.

Warning : Rooms are not end-to-end encrypted, and content can be streamed to Facebook Life if the video chat creator wishes. Conference participants can complain both about the events taking place in the video chat and about the name of the room.

Leaving Room

If you want to leave the conversation, just click on the cross icon. Until you leave the room, you will not be able to make other video calls.

Before deleting a Room, you must first exit it. To do this, click on its icon on your main page and click on the “Delete” button.

You can understand that the video chat was deleted successfully, as follows – the room avatar will change to the video camera icon, the “Start” button will disappear, and “Create” will appear instead
